Spiritual Communion
An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
-St. Alphonsus Liguori

At this time of the global pandemic, it may be the first time we've heard about making a Spiritual Communion. It is not something that is new and certainly not only pertinent during this time. "It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion is “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly embrace Him” at a time or in circumstances when one cannot receive Him in sacramental Communion. (Saint Thomas Aquinas). The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily."
