A Note From Mary Jo Keen,
Coordinator of Youth Ministry
As we approach the end of another school year, and likewise ministry year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many blessings of this particular year. I could share about the many weekly ministry events, community and faith building activities, retreats, conferences, trips, etc… but I think there is one blessing “unique” to this year that is bearing great fruit in youth ministry. It is prayer!
As Catholics we have such a rich tradition of prayer with various forms and styles. These can include rote prayers, specific devotions, novenas, etc… Most of us have our favorite prayers and devotions that connect us to the heart of the Father. Additionally, we all have the personal intentions we hold in our heart for our loved ones and friends that are also part of our daily prayers. In my own experience, I found that I was very comfortable saying “I will keep you in my prayers”, but became very uncomfortable when I felt the nudge from the Holy Spirit to actually do it in the moment. I also found that when I followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit and prayed for people in their need, in the moment, there was great grace and blessing (for both myself and the person I was praying for). This of course should be of no surprise, because God is SO generous with His grace… all He wants is our “yes” (even if it is to pray out loud with someone). As the Lord was building my courage to step out and pray with people, He was also convicting my heart that I was to share this with others, especially our youth. This need to step out and actively pray with each other was reinforced at a breakout session given by Bishop Joseph Espaillat at the National Catholic Youth Conference. So, in youth ministry we have started doing just that. Each night at the end of our small group time, the youth pair off and pray for each other (out loud) using this simple prayer model. (See below.) They have a card to follow, and it’s simple! Simple doesn’t mean easy, but they are stepping out of their comfort zones and intentionally praying for one another. Each week, this 1:1 prayer becomes a little more comfortable. Our hope and prayer is that through equipping our youth with a simple prayer method and practicing it week after week, it will go beyond the walls of youth ministry and be a way of life!
The fruit of boldly praying for one another in youth ministry has been abundant… it’s brought beautiful honesty & vulnerability, confidence & trust in the Lord, and a powerful awareness that the Lord wants to work through us in the lives of others. I submit the same challenge to you as a parish family, as I do to our youth. The next time someone asks for your prayer, respond by asking, “Is it okay if we pray right now?”. And then, Go for it! God will bless you for stepping out in His name!
